Description
Superb and Historic Early War Massachusetts Overcoat This remarkable gray greatcoat was worn by Major Russell Sturgis, Jr. of the 45th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. Sturgis was a member of the famed Independent Corps of Cadets which served as the nucleus of Company A of that regiment. The collar and front of the coat are attractively trimmed in red piping. Attached is a dramatic ¾ length cape also piped in red and completely lined in red flannel providing the piece with great visual appeal. Each side of the cape has an interior pocket, closed by a small flat covered button. Three lines of 1/8 inch black looped tape decorate each cuff, denoting the rank of major and adding to the garment's handsome appearance. All seven original coat size State of Massachusetts buttons (by "R & W Robinson") are on the front of the coat and two at the tails. The five rare Independent Corps of Cadet buttons ("ICC" in Old English maker marked "D. Evans") remain on the cape. Two additional small ICC buttons are at the collar. The coat is completely lined in typical green polished cotton, quilted in the top half. Condition is excellent with no mothing. The lining shows some minor wear and a spot of slight discoloration and there is a negligible break in the red piping at one side of the collar. Sturgis began his membership in the Cadets in 1858. The unit was called out to serve at Ft. Warren in the summer of 1862 and a few months later he recruited a contingent for the newly-forming 45th regiment, known as the "Cadet Regiment." Soon after the unit was organized, Sturgis was named its major, seeing action at Kinston, Newbern and Goldsboro, N.C. The coat was originally in the collection of prominent military antiquarian James Stametelos and is complete with a notarized letter of provenance from the consignor. Also included is an original copy of the 550+ page regimental history printed in 1908 and containing a wonderful biography of Sturgis and background information on the Cadets. A most striking and historical coat.Auction Info
