Spanish-American War: Cased West Indies Naval Campaign Medal (Sampson Medal) Awarded to Fred Du Ross, A Crewmember Serving Aboard the USS Dolphin.38 mm, stamped FRED. DU ROSS C. P. (Coal Passer) on the rim. The reverse is marked Guantanamo with the date June 11-12-13. The medal is housed in a fitted purple-velvet lined leather case. The USS Dolphin was a dispatch boat assigned to blockade duty off Havana, Cuba. The Dolphin is significant in that she was first vessel in the new American steel navy, and saw action in the war. She had a small crew; 7 officers and 110 enlisted men, under the command of Commander H. W. Lyon. On April 27, she captured the 31 ton Spanish vessel, Lola. On June 6, she was fired upon by the guns of the Morro Castle at Santiago. On June 14, 1898, she bombarded the Spanish position in the Battle of Cuzco Well, near Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. After the battle, she carried the American and Cuban wounded, including Captain William F. Spicer and First Lieutenant Wendell C. Neville back to Guantanamo Bay.
