Description
Rare Spanish-American First Philippine Republic War Flag, Captured September 17, 1899 by a Soldier in the 13th Regiment, 3rd Brigade, New York Infantry. 10¾" hoist; 17" fly. Constructed of three hand-sewn red, blue and white silk pieces with stars and sun emblem painted by hand in the canton. The flag shows honest use and there are two large burn holes in the upper right corner of the red field which appear be commensurate with battle damage. It has been lightly sewn to a cotton backing to strengthen it from further damage. The consignor states that this flag, as well as another headquarters flag currently in this auction, were captured on September 17, 1899 by Corporal Juluis Staal of the 13th Regiment, 3rd Brigade, New York Infantry and were claimed to have been the personal flags of Philippine Commander Emilio Aguinaldo. Based on verbal history, the captured flags were turned over to the Army Command, who at some unknown date, sold 90-95% of all remaining U.S. Spanish-American vintage equipment, stock, etc. to Francis Bannerman of New York. Bannerman took the stock and opened a museum in New York featuring relics from the Spanish-American War, including U.S., Cuban, and Philippine army militaria. Bannerman eventually closed the New York store and moved to Bannerman Island, so before doing so he held many sales and auctions to reduce the stock of his store. These flags are said to have been purchased in one such auction in the 1960s or 1970s. One account holds that the flags were purchased for the Army Museum at Fort Huachuca in Arizona but they were deaccessioned in the 1990s. Subsequently the flags have been in four collector's hands. This fantastic flag, with all its rich history has once again come on the collector's market and would have a key place in any Span-Am war collection.Auction Info
