Description

Rare Spanish-American First Philippine Republic Headquarters Flag of Commander Emilio Aguinaldo, Captured by the 13th Regiment, 3rd Brigade New York Infantry, September 17, 1899. 14" hoist; 23½" fly. Constructed of three hand-sewn white, red, and blue silk pieces with the stars and sun emblem applied and accentuated with gold-wire thread. The flag displays some honest fraying and a short split or two in the folds, otherwise it remains relatively bright and in excellent condition. Affixed to the flag is a small note card with hand notation reading "Original Filipino Flag" and what is presumably an acquisition or stock number "No. 125". A small number "134" sticker is affixed to the note card as well. The consignor states that this flag, as well as another war flag currently in this auction, were captured on September 17, 1899 by Corporal Juluis Staal of the 13th Regiment, 3rd Brigade, New York Infantry and were claimed to have been the personal flags of Philippine Commander Emilio Aguinaldo. Based on verbal history, the captured flags were turned over to the Army Command, who at some unknown date, sold 90-95% of all remaining U.S. Spanish-American vintage equipment, stock, etc. to Francis Bannerman of New York. Bannerman took the stock and opened a museum in New York featuring relics from the Spanish-American War, including U.S., Cuban, and Philippine army militaria. Bannerman eventually closed the New York store and moved to Bannerman Island, so before doing so he held many sales and auctions to reduce the stock of his store. These flags are said to have been purchased in one such auction in the 1960s or 1970s. One account holds that the flags were purchased for the Army Museum at Fort Huachuca in Arizona but they were deaccessioned in the 1990s. Subsequently the flags have been in four collector's hands. Given the rich history of this flag and its superior construction, it would make a wonderful display piece in any collector's study or "war room".
