Cased Presentation Sword Belonging to Col. Herbert Howland Sargent by Shannon, Miller & Crane, N.Y. The cased deluxe presentation sword, having a slightly curved 34-inch blade etched with floral scrolls, panoplies of arms and patriotic motifs, the background with gold gilt wash. Right side etched with owner's name: Herbert H. Sargent. Ricasso marked: Shannon/Miller/&/Crane. Gilt-finished three-bar guard with deep-relief carved panel sculpted with an American eagle surmounting a laurel wreath and flanked by flags. Gilt wire-wrapped ribbed rayskin grip with pommel cap sculpted in the form of a bearded warrior. Crouching American eagle finial. Brass wire sword knot. Contained in original silver-plated steel scabbard with engraved patriotic panels and presentation panel reading: Presented to /Col. Herbert H. Sargent/5th U.S. Volunteer Infantry at Camp Meade, Va. /May 30th 1899 as a token of affectionate/esteem by his Officers. The scabbard is adorned with deeply engraved gilt mountings with flags and arms panoplies flanked by floral scrolls. Two gilt hanging rings. Sword contained in original light blue silk-lined wooden display case, the inner side of lid with diagonal silk ribbon bearing the name: Herbert H. Sargent. Black pebble-finished leatherette covering.

Herbert Howland Sargent attended the U.S. Military Academy in July 1879; promoted 2nd Lt. of Cavalry June 13, 1883; 1st Lt. June 19, 1890; Captain 2nd Cavalry March 2, 1899; Honorably mustered out, May 31, 1899; promoted Colonel 5th U.S. Volunteers July 5, 1899; Honorably Discharged May 10, 1901.
Condition: Excellent. Showing light storage wear. Case with wear, tears to lining.
