Description

The terror of the English

John Paul Jones: Silhouette on Glass Wall Plaque. Silhouette on glass of naval legend John Paul Jones (2.75" x 3.5") mounted within a 5" x 6.25" ebonized wood wall plaque with brass acorn hanger. Jones faces right, wearing a military uniform and a tricorn hat. The coat is blue, his ruffled shirt white. There are gold highlights on his wig, epaulets, shirt and jacket. The back side has an original label which, though worn, we decipher as follows: "John Paul Jones 1747-1792. The terror of the English. Went so far as to pursue and capture the British warships in the English navy." Very slight warp to the wood, commensurate with age. Appears to have never been opened or tampered with. The glass is slightly loose and moves around. It is captioned on the bottom: "Capt. John Paul Jones 1780." Definitely appears of late 18th-century vintage. The cataloger recalls seeing it 43 years ago in the private collection of a New York City Americana dealer.
