Description
Historically Important Pistol and Sword Identified to Hugh McPherson, Norfolk, Virginia, who Served with Col. Moses Hazen's Regiment of Continental Troops. McPherson served with the regiment from July 29, 1782 to June 30, 1783, although with these Revolutionary War records being notoriously inaccurate and incomplete, his service was quite possibly more extensive. The French silver mounted pistol bears the discharge mark of Nantes, France, 1746. 13" overall with a 7 7/8" .60 caliber smoothbore octagon to round barrel. silver front sight. The gun was originally apparently full stock, the wood now shortened to 1½" forward of the lock. The gun is elaborately relief carved forward of the trigger guard and around the barrel tang. All furniture is of silver including the magnificent eaglehead butt cap. There is intricate silver wire inlay, about 50% of which remains, around the butt cap and on the wrist. The butt cap screw is missing and the tail of the side plate is broken and missing. Barrel generally with smooth dark patina and a few scattered patches of light pitting. The unmarked lock is smooth and gray and the gun has been converted to percussion using a drum. Mechanically fine.The sword is a form generally associated with the period of the American Revolution, and is elaborately script engraved on the face of the knuckle bow "Hugh McPherson". The sword is silver mounted and displays a French discharge mark from the late 18th century. The 28¼" blade is slightly curved, with a wide shallow central fuller, and a deep narrow fuller along the top. Classic period form, with the guard splitting into two branches at the base of the knucklebow. This example displays the refinements of oval inserts between the branch and the blade, and a pierced outward branch. There is a collar on the underside of the guard that fits over the scabbard throat. Flat cap pommel with no capstan, scalloped along the bottom edge. There is a wide decoratively engraved ferrule at the base of the grip. The grip retains about 40% of the original leather, with the cord and sheet silver wrap intact. All silver totally untouched/ uncleaned. The blade exhibits a deep dark patina with some old surface rust and a few small patches of light pitting, also totally untouched. The backstitched leather scabbard, with incised line decoration, is about 80% intact. There are no mounts. Identified American weapons from this period are very rare and these pieces are especially desirable associated with a Virginia regiment that was present at Yorktown.
