Description

Great US Surcharged French Model 1766 or 1768 Charleville Musket, identified by the spring holding the rear barrel band in place. All metal is generally gray with areas of dark patina and some scattered minor pitting. Gun appears to be overall untouched other than a few very old repairs. 44 3/4" smoothbore barrel with "I" proof at breech. Lock is marked Charleville with large, deep US surcharge behind the flint hammer. Stock shows general wear with old repairs at the barrel tang through to the trigger guard and a 2 1/2" missing sliver behind the front band. Stock exhibits the deep surcharges of NY , IP and the number 3. Surcharges likely applied subsequent to the Revolution when these guns fell into the possession of US arsenals, with the large NY and IP on the stock likely representing New York and Inspected/Proved. Really an exceptionally nice surcharged Charleville that doubtless saw service during the American Revolution.
