Description

George Washington: Battle of Trenton Flag Relic. 14" x 16" double-glazed framed presentation featuring a 5" x 8" segment of a hand-painted flag captioned "This is a Piece of Washington's 'Battle Flag' used at the battle of 'Trenton', Dec. 26th 1776. Given to J. P. Ross by the curator of the Museum at Alexandria, Virginia 1865". The other side houses a 19th century sheet of paper with the same identification marked "The above is in my father's handwriting. Bella Ross Blair" along with an August 5, 1946 transmittal TLS from Bella Blair to the Secretary of a Lawrence, Kansas lodge giving the background story to the fragment and giving them permission to sell the relic and use the funds generated as they see fit. "This piece of flag was given to my father, John P. Ross, by the Curator of the Museum in Alexandria, Va. as the piece was torn and hanging by a few threads and the Curator said someone would take it anyway... so he was the lucky one to receive this piece. Shortly after in the 60's, the Museum was burned, so this is really the only piece of the historic flag in existence." The format is typical of the period. It reminds of us the another hand-painted flag fragment in the New York Historical Society Collection, carried in Washington's 1789 inaugural parade. This is an impressive and iconic piece with direct ties to the most famous battle of the American Revolution. An important item.
