Description
In superb condition.
Exceptional American Officer's Saber with the Original Scabbard and Frog, Circa 1775-1785. 33" overall with a curved 27½" hand forged blade that is perfectly flat and, with the exception of a few minor stains, about mint. There is one chip on the edge at the midway point but it is the result of a forging flaw, not impact. The heavy cast brass D-guard is faceted as it approaches the pommel, which is formed by a flattened disc at the top of the guard, with a separate multi tiered domed cap. The lower portion of the guard is flat, with the quillon faceted identically to the top of the guard. Hilt perfect with nice dark patina. The swirl carved bone grip is also perfect with a wonderful mellow age patina, and signs that it was originally wrapped with wire. The black leather back stitched scabbard has incised line decoration. The finish is crackled with some flaking, but very sound and supple with no open stitching. 3" brass tip that is seamed at the bottom edge. The 6" long leather frog, which also functions as a top mount, if in fine condition and retains a small portion of the original leather sling. A wonderful 18th century American sword that very possibly dates to the period of the Revolution.Auction Info
