Description
Carved French and Indian War Map Powder Horn Named to Thomas Walker Cooper, Royal Regiment of Artillery, c. 1760. This magnificent horn features a map of the Hudson and Mohawk rivers from New York up toward Canada. The front of the powder horn displays the skyline of the city of New York as it appeared in the period 1859-1763. The horn is inscribed "Thomas Walker Cooper of the Royal Rg. of Artillery". The map shows towns and forts up and down the rivers. Sites identified on the Hudson River are Fort Saratoga, Fort Miller [F. Mellr], and Fort Edward [F. Edeward], Fort Carillon [F. Carilon] (first name foe what became known as Fort Ticonderoga). The places on the Mohawk River are Half Moon [Helf M], Schenectady [Sknacedy], Fort Hunter, Fort Sir William Johnson [F. Johnston]. The map also shows Albany, Lake Ontario [Lak Ontario], Bvllse (?), and Niagara [Nailar]. Among the pictographs are ships in New York Harbor and on Lake Ontario and a windmill in New York City.The horn has a wonderful, even patina. The butt cap is possibly a period replacement. A fine example of a French and Indian War powder horn.
