Description
British Union Flag from the American Revolutionary Period. This pre-1801 British flag can be distinguished from its modern counterpart by the lack of the red diagonals; the so-called St. Patrick's red counter-changed cross. Used between 1707 and 1801 on land, this wool flag dates from the period of the American Revolution.
This hand sewn flag is 60" X 76" and affixed to a period wooden staff iron triangular spear point finial. The entire flag has been placed in a conservation netting.
The Union Flag was created in 1601 and its use was restricted to the Royal Navy. After the act of Union in 1707 it was permitted to use the Union flag to identify Crown Property on land. It was eventually adopted by land forces as well and after 1747. It was used as the "King's Color" by British regiments.
The Royal Warrant for silk regimental colors was 72" X 78" which indicates that the size and fabric of this flag preclude it being issued by a Royal Armory. Instead, it's likely that it was made in North American to identify Royal property or persons in the form of a government house, dock or yard or fort. It is also possible that the flag was used as a field expedient color by a colonial New England militia unit.
According to information given to the buyer verbally at the time of the 2007 auction, this flag was purchased by Norm Flayderman in approximately 1948. It was in a bundle with other early flags, all the rest of which were of American origin. This suggests at least the possibility that this flag was captured in a Revolutionary War battle. Military historian Col. Craig Nannos has stated that the style of the pike on which it is mounted is consistent with Revolutionary War use. It was also reviewed by Textile Preservation Associates who dated it to the middle to late 18th Century.
Extant British flags with their staff and finials from the Revolutionary Era are exceeding rare, and this flag represents an opportunity for the advanced collector to acquire a period British flag from the era of the end of Colonial rule and the beginning of the new nation.
Condition: The flag is in poor condition. The flag is used, worn, faded, dehydrated and fragmented. It has been placed in conservation netting typical of those used in late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Exhibited: Norm Flayderman Collection
