One of the rarest of all U.S. martial longarms, in superb condition.
Very Rare, Original Flintlock US M1807 Carbine, also Known as the "Indian Carbine," Dated 1810. Out of a total production of 1202 guns, only a handful of these guns are known to exist in their original flintlock configuration. Significant as not only the first official U.S. carbine made in a national armory, but as the only gun made in a national armory under order from the Indian Department, for presentation to friendly Indians. This specimen, doubtless one of the last assembled at Springfield, conforms precisely to Springfield Armory specifications in every respect, and exhibits the anomaly of the lock not being marked with an eagle, dated 1810 at the tail, and the barrel, while displaying the correct P, eaglehead and V proofmarks, does not bear the US, and is undated. The stock, also conforming precisely to Springfield specifications, exhibits the script US inspector's mark in the wood opposite the lock. Hammer of the earliest Springfield type with distinctive curl at the top. Interestingly the frizzen, frizzen screw and frizzen spring screw, all bear a benchmark of two tiny dots. The gun is in truly exceptional condition. All metal smooth, gray and untouched, with just some small scattered spots of salt and peppering, and some very minor pitting in the touchhole/breech area. There is also one small abrasion on the left side of the breech. Absolutely, unquestionably, original flintlock. All brass furniture perfect with nice mellow untouched patina. Walnut stock also exceptional with deep rich patina and fine inspector's mark. A few scattered minor dents and missing a few small slivers along the left side of the forestock, minor. There is a ½" X 3" replaced sliver of wood at the tip of the ride side of the forestock. Expertly done, difficult to detect, and detracts little. Retains the original ramrod with horn tip.
