Description

Very Fine Late 17th to Early 18th Century German Wheelock Rifle. 33 3/8", .58 caliber with deeply rifled bore, octagonal swamped barrel inlaid on the top in gold "J. O. CASPER. DILPP IN STAIN." The elaborate gilded rear sight uses a folding leaf. The lock is engraved with three dogs attacking a bear while a hunter is shooting at the bear. The cock displays a swan floating in a castle moat, with the ring cover engraved in a shell pattern. All of the mounts are gilt bronze. The trigger guard exhibits a relief sculpted figure of a seated Diana with her bow and dog on the finial, extensive floral work on the bow and trigger plate. The side plate has sculpted engraving of a hunting party in pursuit of deer, with two dogs and two hunters with wheelocks in a forest in front of a castle. The forest is also populated with birds and other small animals. The face of the butt plate is engraved with two deer and the tang is sculpted with a hunter in a forest, the same scene being depicted on the tail of the lower ramrod pipe. The patchbox lid is sculpted with the raised bust of a woman at the rear, and a castle in a forest at the front. The patchbox release is above the woman's head. All other surfaces are covered with sculpted and engraved scroll work. The forearm tip, ramrod tip and cheek piece moulding, are all ivory. The blackened wood stock is extensively and elaborately relief carved with floral scrolls. There is a wedge grip safety mounted on the forestock that must be depressed to release the sear bar. All metal with smooth gray patina, the furniture retaining 85% of the original gilt. The stock has a number of hairlines and a few missing slivers along the forestock, else sound and excellent. The internal parts of the lock are lightly engraved and there is a second set of screw holes for mounting. Mechanically fine and a magnificent rifle.
