Description
A truly choice example of a uniform coat from this colorful period of American military history.
Stunning American Militia Artillery Officer's Coatee, Circa 1835. Superb condition, really as fine an example as we've seen. The one piece buttons (forty-five total, missing only one on one tail) are AY57A (Albert) with the W. H. Jones & Co./ Extra backmark. All buttons retain 99% of the original gilt and are absolutely indigenous to the coat. The small two piece gilt eagles with Scovills backmark that affect cuff closure (two on each cuff) are unlisted. While the coat exhibits the form and cut typical of the first quarter of the 19th century, the buttons clearly date the coat to circa 1835. Constructed of fine quality blue wool with red wool facings. Tight sleeves, 3" high standup collar, tufted at the shoulders. ¼" wide gold bullion tape at the collar and on the breast with bullion braid on the sleeves/ cuffs. Padded breast and, of course, entirely hand stitched. There are hand whipped eyelets and bullion tape for attaching the epaulettes, as well as a red wool tuft at the left shoulder designating rank, probably a sub-altern. Gold bullion star attached at the bottom of each tail. Both the sleeves and the single external tail pocket are lined with linen. The condition is exceptional with just a few small moth holes and some very minor moth tracking scattered about, negligible. The top edge strip of bullion tape on the collar is worn/ frayed at the back, obviously the result of normal wear. All wool retaining brilliant color.Auction Info
