Description
An exceedingly rare piece of early American military headgear.
Rare Form American Dragoon Helmet, Circa 1815-1820. Unbound jockey style with flat, flared visor and pierced tin comb. The helmet itself is a form generally associated with the late 18th century, however, this example utilizes the US regulation 1812-1815 pewter dragoon cap plate. The plate is pierced with a set of two holes on each corner with two of these sets actually utilized in attaching the plate to the helmet. The plate is in near perfect untouched condition and clearly indigenous to the helmet with an ostrich feather plume inserted at the top. The body of the helmet is of hard "jerked" leather and is in superb condition. Just a few minor cracks to the exterior finish as well as a few minor bumps and dents but really excellent with no open seams or flaking. There is a faux leather neck protector attached at the back. The tin comb rises to 3" at the front and exhibits three 11/16" circular piercings. A plume of black feathers on a horn shaft is attached to the full length of the comb. The comb is attached to the helmet via stitching through a series of small holes along the top seam. Very sound and completely original. The interior, as is generally the case with these early helmets, is simply a linen "bag" with a draw string at the top. In wonderful, untouched "as worn" condition.Auction Info
