Johnson's Island Confederate Prisoner of War Camp Autograph Album Belonging to Lt. James H. Daviess, Company E, 5th Kentucky Cavalry, With Remarkable Signed Carte de Visite of Daviess. James H. Daviess enlisted on September 2, 1862 at Lexington, Kentucky as a 2nd Lieutenant. He mustered into E Company of the 5th Kentucky Cavalry and eventually attained the rank of Lieutenant. He was captured at Mt. Sterling, Kentucky on June 9, 1864 at Johnson's island, Ohio on June 26, 1864. Included in the lot are: (1) 1/6th plate tintype of Daviess in uniform. The image is housed in a leather case and is rather dark, but still in fair condition. (2) Superb signed CDV of Daviess in uniform, Webster & Brother, Louisville studio imprint blind-stamped on the lower front edge. Signed: "James H. Daviess / 1st Lieut. Co. E 5th Ky Cav. / Dukes Brig. / Morgans Division / Wheelers Corps / Army of Tenn". On the reverse he lists his entire military history from the time he enlisted on July 15, 1862 until he arrived home on June 16, 1865. (3) The jewel of the lot is Daviess' autograph album, measuring 5.5" x 8", with 64 pages of autographs, about 200 in total of fellow imprisoned Confederate Officers and their regiments, imprisoned at Johnson's Island. All the autographs in the album - the majority being in regiments under Morgan's command, are legible and dark. A few of the officers give the location where they were captured. The flyleaf of the album has a wonderful pen and ink drawing of a memorial to the fallen hero John Hunt Morgan. The drawing is signed at the lower edge "J. A. Bergin", one of Daviess fellow prisoners. The binding of the album is shaken and the covers and many of the pages are loose but all appear to present and accounted for. It appears Daviess made a number of pencil remarks in the album after the war, one example reads: "Lt. Quinn Lamar Harvard, 10th Conf.'d Regt. Cavalry, Scott's Brigade" - "The only Georgian I ever heard cuss Joe Brown before the surrender" (Brown was Governor of Georgia). This album is a priceless source of reference for researching Confederate officers and their regiments.Auction Info
