Description

Full Stock, Original Flintlock, Pennsylvania Rifle, Likely the Work of the Hess Family of Lehigh County, Pa. C. 1830. 42" deeply rifled, .50 caliber, unsigned, full octagonal barrel. Smooth dark patina with excellent bore. Original Joseph Golcher flintlock, cast brass side plate. Rather wide trigger guard with shoulder at the front, 3" brass decorative toeplate that terminates in a point. Two piece unengraved patchbox, generically similar to other examples found on rifles by this family, with single pierced decorative finial, 7 1/2" overall. Patchbox release in a slot on the buttplate. Buttplate extension nearly flat, lower ramrod ferrule with 2", flared extension, and barrel tang with 1" tapered extension, all characteristics typical of rifles from this school. The artificially grained maple stock is about perfect, with nice patina and absolutely no damage or repairs. Three tier moulded cheek piece with inlaid silver crescent moon engraved with a face. The lower barrel pin escutcheons are silver eight pointed stars, while the upper three sets of barrel pin escutcheons are exquisitely engraved silver fish. Retains what appears to be the original artificially striped ramrod. A magnificent rifle for both quality and condition from a very desirable school.
