Description

Fine Quality American Militia Artillery Officer's Saber, Circa 1835, by A. W. Spies which is die stamped on the back edge of the blade. Adam W. Spies operated in New York City, beginning circa 1833. 30½" curved blade decorated with gilded and engraved floral and military motifs, including a panoply of arms, on the obverse, with American shield. The blade decoration also incorporates etched panels. The blade retains traces of the gilt with numerous patches of dark colored light pitting and nicks, most prevalent toward the tip. The brass hilt utilizes shield shaped langets of rays with a five pointed star in the center. The reverse P guard in a twisted rope like motif. One piece carved bone grip with a few old minor chips at the top and attractive mellow age patina. The cross guard is slightly bent, but no breaks and easily restored, else excellent. Brass scabbard excellent with just some scattered shallow dents and nice light age patina. Elaborately engraved at the ring mounts and drag with leaf/ scroll motifs. There is an eagle surmounting an American shield with fifteen stars, exquisitely engraved between the ring mounts. The throat is missing. An indigenous Texas sword with possible Texas association as implied by the five pointed star on the langets.
