Description

Dragoon Strap Spurs: Possible US 1833 Spurs.
Only speculation can be offered as to what the 1833 Dragoon spur looked like, but R. Stephen Dorsey gives some hints in his book "The American Military Spur". In a letter dated April 22, 1833 to the Assistant Quartermaster this was requested. "Sir, Yours of the 18th was this morning received. Spurs made of brass, plated in iron will be more serviceable & cheaper than others, & I prefer them. The plate may wear off in time; but that is less objectionable than the liability of brass spurs to break". Clearly, as indicated by the last sentence, brass plated iron was intended, not iron plated brass. Dorsey believes that the spurs produced were strap spurs which were most common to the era, and not heel spurs as specified for the Model 1841 Dragoon spur. The production of iron objects coated with copper or brass dates back to the 1820's. This pair is of the style consistent with what might been seen on spurs of the 1833 period. The pair are quite large, measuring 7 1/4" and weighing over 5 ounces. The 27 point rowels measure 1 1/8". A scarce pair of early spurs.
