Superb condition, fine quality.
Cased Set of American Percussion Saw-Handled Dueling Pistols by P. Vallee, Philadelphia, Circa 1838. Vallee is listed at the corner of 2d and Walnut Sts. In Philadelphia from 1826 - 1840. Guns appear to be unfired. 15" overall with 9½" .45 caliber smoothbore octagonal barrels. The barrels retains 90% of the original acid brown finish with just some fading and a few scratches. Small silver blade front sight and v-notch rear sight at tang. The percussion bolsters are case hardened with two inlaid silver bands. The breech tangs which extend 2½" on to the top of the saw handles are covered with floral/ scroll engraving and exhibit bright case hardened colors as do the bolsters. The back action locks and hammers are covered with scroll engraving with animal heads on the hammer faces. Bright case hardened colors hand engraved at the rear P. Vallee/ Phila. Steel trigger guards with finger loop, scroll engraved with profusely engraved pineapple finials, retain about 60% of the bright blue. Steel ramrod ferrules engraved at the tail. Ebony ramrods with brass tips and threaded brass caps covering ball screws on the end. Silver wedge escutcheons, all screw heads engraved. Figured walnut stocks with classic "saw handle" profile. Beautifully checkered bag shaped grips and horn forend tips. Stocks near perfect retaining 90% of the original finish, just some minor scratches and one gun with a negligible age hairline by the wedge. The entire set absolutely untouched/ uncleaned. The 8¾" x 19¼" walnut casing is hand dovetailed and brass mounted including an escutcheon plate on the lid. Brass hooks on the front for closure. Completely original green velvet compartmented interior which includes two ebony cleaning jags, a mainspring vise, a punch and a screw driver. Small compartment full of round balls. An important set of American pistols in beautiful untouched condition.Auction Info
