Description

[War of 1812]: Fells Point Baltimore 13-Star Flag. 60" x 32" hand-stitched flag made of wool bunting. Three whipped grommets with sail cloth canvas hoist. A rope with a loop at the top has been sewn to the edge of the hoist. 13 appliqued stars on both sides of the canton, arranged in a 4/5/4 row pattern. The fly is hemmed and the hoist side is doubled over/reinforced. Found in an attic in Fells Point, Baltimore and thought to date from the early 19trh century. Undoubtedly a ship's flag from this famous port, home to privateers in the Revolution and War of 1812. Likely made in Fells Point proper, as the manufacture of flags and mariner's clothing was an important cottage industry at the time. The "Baltimore Connection" with the attack on Ft. McHenry (which served as inspiration for the "Star-Spangled Banner") adds to the mystique.

Condition: Unusually bold & bright colors. 5" tear at the upper left edge of the canton. Scattered small holes and mothing. Excellent overall.
