Description
Normandy Escort Ship, Omaha Beach - Free French Frigate L'Aventure. L'Aventure (F707), a River Class frigate, was originally commissioned in January 1944 by the Royal Navy as the HMS Braid (K263) but she was quickly transferred to Forces Navales Françaises Libres or Free French Naval Forces (FNFL). Her French appellation was in honor of a 1798 privateer of the early French Republic that took seven prizes until her capture in 1799.This flag is a 36" X 60" sewn, silk, flag, fringed with golden-yellow fringe on three sides. The flag is finished with a pole hem sleeve. There are no markings, but a section of a red naval cap tally has been affixed to the flag's obverse. This was previously identified as a "Captain's HQ Flag." However, neither the pre-war French Navy nor the WWII FNFL used such flags and it is likely that this was a flag intended for use on the quarterdeck of the L'Aventure.
The River class of ships were 151 British-designed frigates built and operated during World War II. L'Aventure was one of five such ships commissioned by the FNFL. Originally used for training, she was assigned to escort transports and supply ships in the English Channel. L'Aventure, at the insistence of FNFL Admiral André Lemonnier, the French naval chief of staff, was integrated into the immense allied armada being assembled for Operation Neptune, the maritime support for Operation Overlord. On June 6,1944, D-Day, she served as an escort for American transports heading for Omaha Beach, and later provided shore bombardment to support the land forces.
This is a flag associated with one of the few French ships that participated in the Normandy landings and, as such, represents an obscure, yet significant part of the history of D-Day French vessels helping in the liberation of their occupied homeland. A great addition for a D-Day, Omaha Beach, or French WWII collector.

Condition: The flag is in excellent condition. It is used, and slightly worn, but otherwise complete.
This flag was formerly in the collection of Dr. Clarence Rungee, and is accompanied by his original museum inventory sheet with identifying information.
