Description

Manhattan Project: Los Alamos Trinitite Souvenir. Apparently, after testing the first atomic bomb in the New Mexico desert, scientists of the Manhattan Project figured they'd like to have a souvenir. The radiation and heat generated by the blast melted some of the sand into mini-boulders, later termed "Trinitite." One of these rocks was encased in a glass dome and mounted on a steel paperweight base inscribed "Fused Earth From Crater/ 'World's First Atomic Bomb'/ 0530 16 July '45 Trinity, NM./ Compliments of/ Kate Williams, Los Alamos, N.M.". The weight measures 2.25" across and 2.75" high. Unlike other examples, the trinitite sample is not totally enveloped in plastic, but glued in place, beneath the dome. There is glue residue around the circumference of the dome and in various spots on the exterior. We sold a similar example in 2011 for $13,145.
