Description

A Rare and Important Set.

Two Consecutively Serial Numbered Colt M1877 Double Action "Lightning" Revolvers, Identified to the Pacific Express Company. Both guns caliber .38 long Colt #166201 was, according to the factory letter that accompanies the gun, shipped from the factory May 10, 1909, with a 4½" barrel and blue finish, to the Simmons Hardware Co., St. Louis, Mo. There were twenty guns of the same type in the shipment. Interestingly the barrel on this gun measures precisely 4 3/16", not 4½", but unquestionably unaltered. The gun exhibits a pleasant smooth dark patina mixing with 20% of the original blue. Mechanically perfect, crisp markings, fine bore. The gun is marked on the lower portion of the backstrap, "PAC EXP CO 166201" using individual die stamps, unquestionably authentic and "of the period." The gun is further marked on the left side of the trigger guard, also with individual die stamps, "0112", doubtless Pacific Express Co.'s internal number. The gun is totally untouched.

#166200
was also shipped on May 10, 1909 to Simmons Hardware Co. with a blue finish and 6" barrel. There were five guns of the same configuration in the shipment. Although this gun does not bear the Pacific Express Co. marking it is logical to assume that both guns were purchased at the same time, from Simmons, by Pacific Express. This gun retains about 40% of the original blue and case colors, the balance clean and light gray. Also mechanically perfect with crisp markings and a fine bore. Again untouched and a very pretty gun. Unquestionably one of the great rarities in Colt collecting are those guns bearing consecutive serial numbers, with this set being even more desirable with the Pacific Express Co. association.
