Description

Scroll Engraved Colt SAA Revolver, .44 Rimfire Series, #747, Matching. The accompanying factory letter states the gun was shipped December 23, 1878 to J. P. Moores Sons c/o P. Summersville, New York, N. Y. as one of a two gun shipment. The finish is listed as blue but the stocks and barrel length are not recorded. The gun is now smooth and gray with just some small patches of very very fine pitting, primarily on the cylinder. The gun exhibits full coverage with what is obviously period scroll engraving. The engraving showing smooth even wear commensurate with the rest of the gun. The barrel is now 4 3/4", however, we are of the opinion it was originally longer, probably 7 1/2", and shortened during the period, subsequent to the application of the engraving, based on the barrel scrolls extending to the muzzle, with indications they originally extended beyond that point. Mechanically fine, excellent bore, 1871 and 1872 patent dates on side of frame and 44 CAL on left side of trigger guard. Barrel also marked 44 just forward of the cylinder pin. The checkered ivory stocks clearly period and indigenous to this gun, showing smooth honest wear with great mellow aged patina. A rare engraved Colt single action with superb character showing many years of honest careful use.
