Description

Grover Cleveland Signed Naval Commission for a Rear Admiral. One sheet of vellum, 15 x 19 inches, Washington D. C.; January 21, 1887. Document appointing Walter W. Queen "a Rear Admiral in the Navy." Signed, "Grover Cleveland" and countersigned by "D. B. Whitney" as Secretary of the Navy. Blue embossed United States Navy Department seal near bottom of document.

Walter W. Queen entered the U. S. Navy in 1841 as a midshipman. He served in the Mexican War and the Civil War, gathering many commendations throughout his service. Queen was promoted to passed midshipman in 1847, then to lieutenant-commander in 1862, commander in 1866, captain in 1874, and commodore in 1883. He was appointed a Rear Admiral at the end of his term of service and retired from the Navy in 1886.

Condition: Three flattened folds with creasing and wrinkling throughout. Lightly toned, particularly at center fold. Minor scattered foxing. Pencil notation at top left corner.
