Description
William Wallace Smith Bliss Autograph Letter Signed to Major John Munroe. 4pp. written on first page only, 4to, "Hd. Qr. Army of Occupation, Camp Near Matamoros," April 8, 1846. On March 25, 1846, an advance party of the "Army of Occupation" reached Point Isabel, where General Taylor established a fortified supply depot he named Fort Polk in honor of the President. A small garrison, commanded by Major John Munroe, was left at Point Isabel while the bulk of Taylor's troops continued to advance to the Rio Grande where Taylor established Fort Brown near what would become Brownsville. The General expects that you will arrest any officer who may presume to interfere with your arrangements in this particular." Fort Bliss, at San Antonio, is named for W. W. S. Bliss. Written on heavy paper with creamy age toning. Right edge of first leaf bears partial fold separation and small sections of paper loss. Very good condition.
