General William Westmoreland Sterling Silver Presentation Box, Vietnam, 1968. The magnificent box was presented to General William Westmoreland upon his leaving the position of Commander United States Military Assistance Command, Vietnam and General Commanding United States Army Vietnam. The box is engraved with the general's name and title, COMUSMAC/CG USARV, and the dates of his service, 1 August 1964-12 June 1968. The box measures 8" x 5.5" x 4" high. It is English made, by Deakin & Francis Ltd of Birmingham, in 1967 and the box bears all the appropriate hallmarks. The names and ranks of the donors are engraved in the top, including: General Creighton W. Abrams, Deputy Commander, Military Assistance Command, Vietnam (later Chief of Staff of the United States Army); Major General Walter T. Kerwin, Jr., Chief of Staff, Military Assistance Command, Vietnam (later Vice Chief of Staff, U.S. Army); Major General Royal N. Baker, USAF, Assistant Chief of Staff for Plans, Military Assistance Command, Vietnam; Major General Willard Pearson, Assistant Chief of Staff for Operations, MACV; Mr. W. E. Colby, Director of Civil Operations and Rural Development Support, Saigon (later Director of the Central Intelligence Agency); Brigadier General Phillip B. Davidson, Chief of US Intelligence in Vietnam; Brigadier General John E. Frizen, USAF, Assistant Chief of Staff for Communications, MACV; Brigadier General A. P. Rollins, Jr., Director of Construction, MACV; Brigadier General Earl F. Cole, Deputy Chief of Staff, Long Binh Post, (later demoted to colonel and stripped of his decorations by the Army for his part in Viet Nam service club frauds); Brigadier General J. R. Chaisson, USMC, Director, Combat Operations Center, Headquarters, MACV, (later Chief of Staff, United States Marine Corps); Brigadier General Donnelly P. Bolton, Assistant Chief of Staff, MACV (later commanded the US Army, Pacific); Brigadier General William S. Coleman, Assistant Commander, 1st Infantry Division; Brigadier General Frank M. Davis, Jr.; Director of Military Personnel Policies, MACV; Brigadier General Robert E. Connor; Brigadier General William E. Bryan, Jr., USAF, Deputy Chief of Staff, MACV; Colonel John Hayes, Senior Advisor, 5th ARVN Division; Colonel Jack T. Pink, Secretary to General Westmoreland; and, William Crum, the "Money King of Viet Nam", who, at one point, held a virtual monopoly on the sales of all slot and pinball machines, jukeboxes and other coin-operated amusements to U.S. military establishments in Viet Nam.
