Description

Armor: Antique Indo-Persian Islamic Steel Helmet Kulah-Khud, Shield Dhal Separ, Ceremonial Battle Axe, and Bazuband, A Matched Set, Nineteenth Century.
The helmet has a hemi-spherical skull formed of a hand forged steel plate with a stout long spike at the top, a pair of plume-holders, sliding nasal, original neck-defense camail of chain mail of rounded iron links, and red cloth lining. Along the rim is a broad band of calligraphic script in silver and heightened in gold koftgari. The height from the top of the spike to the bottom of the mail is 25" and it is 8" in diameter. A few broken or missing links, else, fine. The shield, of circular convex form, has chiseled floral and bird decoration. The center is decorated with a star in gold koftgari and set with four domed bosses. The shield has a border of calligraphic Arabic script and an edge with an applied brass band. It measures 17.75" in diameter. The Persian arm guard, the bazuband, is of solid wootz steel with dramatically hand-chiseled cartouches with matching decoration. The cartouches are surrounded with arabesque borders of gold koftgari. The bazuband has two back panels with the same decoration affixed by chain mail of rounded links and remnants of the interior padding. Also retained are the original buckles and square strap mounts. It has an overall length of 13.5". A few broken or missing links on the bazuband. The axe has a very good curved steel blade, 8" point to point, decorated on both sides with chiseled work highlighted with gold koftgari. The butt has a stylized dragon with open mouth. The axe measures 29.5" overall. An extremely attractive matched set and in fine condition.
