Description

Africa: Very Rare Original Copy of Occupation of Mashonaland, Views by W. Ellerton Fry, (n.p., publisher unknown, October, 1891). In 1890 the newly formed British South Africa Company, at the urging of Cecil Rhodes, Prime Minister of Cape Colony, dispatched a "Pioneer Column" under the command of Frederick Selous to explore the territory of Mashonaland (later renamed Rhodesia and now Zimbabwe). Some 200 pioneers in search of large estates and free gold claims joined 500 British South Africa Company police in the column. Lieutenant William Ellerton Fry served as the column's intelligence officer, meteorologist and assistant to Selous. Fry was also the expedition's photographer. Upon his return to South Africa, Fry produced an elephant-folio-size album (12.5" x 18.25") that contained 154 mounted album photos on 41 leaves each with letterpress captions. The book was bound in green half morocco and titled in gold on front cover. Spine and corners scuffed, spine lose, foxing, else, very good. There were only twelve copies of the album produced, making it one of the rarest books chronicling the history of Zimbabwe. A spectacular find.
William Ellerton Fry, born in Somerset in 1846, immigrated to South Africa in 1872, where he became a prospector, farmer and trader. From 1872 to 1890, he was Secretary and Computer at the Royal Observatory, Cape Town. In later life Fry was a surveyor, diamond prospector and farmer in Rhodesia and South Africa. He died in Mowbray, Cape Town, South Africa in 1930.
