Description
1796 Pattern British Infantry Officer's Sword. The regulation sword for British infantry officer's during the Napoleonic period. Very fine example. Deep relief floral/scroll decoration on the pommel with capstan, quillon, and where the knuckle bow joins the pommel. Hilt is about perfect retaining 50% of the original gilt. Folding counterguard and twisted silver wire wrap. 30" blade is unetched retaining most of the original lustre with just some tiny patches of pitting along the cutting edge and back. Retains the original leather washer. Brass mounted leather scabbard with maker's name engraved in script in an oval panel on the back of the throat, somewhat worn and difficult to read. Mounts excellent with just one small dent on the throat. Leather scabbard sound with just a few small spots of flaking and an old, well done, repair 3" above the drag, barely discernible. Nice example of this attractive sword that accompanied British Infantry line officers into battle throughout the Napoleonic Wars period.Auction Info
