Xavier Debray's history of the regiment he commanded from 1862 through 1865. At the outbreak of the Civil War, Debray served as aide de camp to Texas Governor Edward Clark in 1861. He quickly advanced in rank, becoming lieutenant colonel and commander of a Texas cavalry battalion by December of that year. The following March, he was commissioned colonel of the Twenty-Sixth Texas Cavalry, which he led in several key campaigns, including the Confederate recapture of Galveston on January 1, 1863, and the Red River campaign in Louisiana in 1864. Even after news of the Confederate surrender in 1865, Debray's regiment remained intact, taking on the role of guarding Houston against looters and marauders.
