Description

Very Scarce and Desirable Civil War US Artillery Officer's Four Button Fatigue Blouse in superb condition. Fine quality blue wool. Four button front with all original Steel and Johnson eagle staff buttons. Three small eagle staff buttons on each non functional cuff. All edges of the coat, including the bottom, collar and pockets, have a 1/8" strip of black silk piping.Double border gold bullion 2nd Lieutenant of Artillery shoulder straps. Double thickness gold bullion lieutenant's bars and coiled brass wire edging. Two exterior pockets lined with dark brown polished cotton. 2" rolled collar with cross stitching for reinforcement on the back. Interior with black polished body lining at both sides on front and no lining in the back. White cotton sleeve lining and one interior breast pocket. Stitched in the right sleeve is a printed cloth label for, "T. McCormick/Merchant Tailor/ Baltimore/149 Baltimore St." with advertisements for additional goods offered. Below the printing on the label, in period ink script is the following, "40 TH/AO (orG)O/Newbern." Apparently where the coat was made by McCormick in the field and possibly a hint to the name /unit of the owner. Coat overall in really excellent sound condition with just a few old neatly stitched repairs to a few scattered small tears/holes. A great example of this very scarce and extremely desirable Civil War US Officer's coat.
