Description

Very Rare Civil War Jennifer Officer's Saddle and Martingale Set. Although part of the effects of a Union officer, Lt. Henry B. Walker of the 121st new York Infantry, and apparently used by him, this is the only Civil War period, clearly military, Jennifer saddle we've ever encountered. The saddle itself is constructed of rawhide over a wooden tree with plain brass shield and brass slot escutcheons. The front and back of the saddle are covered with brass, likely indicating it was meant for use by an officer. The saddle appears to be complete including hooded stirrups, skirts, cinch etc. and is in superb condition with no cracks or splits, just showing honest use. Whether Walker captured this saddle, universally associated with Confederate use and manufacture, and simply adapted for his own use, or had it manufactured to his own specifications, is unknown, but other than the lack of a CS shield it shows every sign of being a Confederate manufactured officer's Jennifer saddle. The saddle is accompanied by the original martingale set with all original attaching straps, buckles etc. The heart shaped center section is edged with yellow leather, normally associating it with cavalry use, and obviously, based on the impressed line originally mounted a heart shaped martingale plate. The heart shaped plate was obviously removed by Walker and replaced with a red painted leather 6th Corps badge with false embroidered brass numerals "121", representing Walker's Regiments, Corps (6th) and Division (1st). A very rare saddle, with unique martingale set in superb condition as adapted for use by a Federal Infantry officer from one of the most hard fought Union regiments of the war.
