Description

Varina Davis: 1885 Autographed Letter Signed. Handsome framed display (19" x 12") that incorporates a CDV of "Mrs. Jefferson Davis" and a letter written by her from Beauvoir, Mississippi on June 14, 1885. It is double glazed, thus allowing the viewer to read both sides of the letter. It is a complimentary letter to a young girl named Bess and starts out by referring to some photos of Bess and Winnie that Varina is sending to her. "We are about as usual here. Winnie has had a lively invitation to go to Syracuse New York to visit Dr. Emory, but strictly between us she and I are both uneasy about Mr Davis's condition. I cannot say he is ill but there is that indescribable expression of 'failing' about him that fills my heart with awe and helpless misery too great for words." The letter has a horizontal separation at the central fold.
