Description
Two Very Fine US Civil War Canteens with Nice Period ID. Both canteens with gray/brown wool covers, fine with just a few small scattered holes, no noteworthy dents. The M1858 smooth-side canteen has original stopper and chain. The bullseye canteen has stopper attached to the canteen with the original string. Both canteens have the original full-length linen slings, showing some honest wear but excellent and sound. The smooth-side canteen bears the period ink ID of "J. Westbrook" on sling. This is John Westbrook who enlisted in the 50th Pennsylvania Infantry on 3/7/64, was wounded in The Wilderness and succumbed to his wounds 5/10/64. The bullseye canteen bears period ink ID, also on the sling, of "J. W. Carter" with difficult to read numerals although "1" and "3" and "VM" are clearly visible. This is John W. Carter of the 113th Ohio Volunteer Infantry (OVM). Carter enlisted 8/22/63 and was killed in action 6/27/64 at Kennesaw Mountain, Ga. Two exceptionally nice Civil War canteens with great ID.Auction Info
