Description

The Finest Civil War Hanes Hand Grenade We've Ever Offered. Perfect overall condition with deep dark patina, absolutely no rust or pitting. 3 1/2" exterior diameter, the interior explosive 'ball' retaining all 14 of the original brass nipples.(unloaded, of course). The exterior shell is deeply marked on one side in 3/8" block letters "Excelsior" and on the other, in a circle, "W. W. Hanes Pat. Aug. 26. 62". Two halves screw together perfectly and, with the exception of the dark patina, totally mint. This novel idea for a hand grenade proved to be as dangerous to the user as it was to the enemy, resulting in a very limited production and very low survival rate. This is the exceptionally rare form incorporating the deep crisp markings, missing on most examples, rare opportunity.
