Description

Surrender at Appomattox: Robert E. Lee's General Orders No. 9. Fair or transmittal copy of Lee's General Orders No. 9, issued at the time of the surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia at Appomattox Court House. It is written on 5" x 8" bifolium lined paper of the type used by Confederate soldiers to pen letters home. The heading is: "Head Quarters/ Army Northn. Viga./ April 10th /65/ Genl. Orders No. 9". The type of paper, ink, abbreviations and punctuation leave no doubt that this is a copy produced at the time of the event, possibly for transmittal to Confederate military units. Partial separation at folds, stains and loss. An important artifact relating to the one of the key events of the war.
