Description
Superb Condition Cased Tranter's Patent 80 Bore Percussion Double Action Revolver with New Orleans Agent's Markings and Excellent Period ID to Confederate Louisiana General F. R. T. Nicholls. The gun is 9½" overall with a 4½" (to the face of the cylinder) octagonal barrel. The frame, barrel, loading lever, trigger guard, backstrap, and butt cap are exquisitely scroll engraved with hand engraved serial number. Marked on the frame top strap "F. T. Guion New Orleans" Also bears proper Tranter's Patent markings and English proofs. F. T. Guion is listed at 20 Charles St. in the 1861 New Orleans directory and other Tranter revolvers are known bearing these same marks. The gun retains 80% of the original bright blue, the balance thinning/with an attractive light brown patina. Finely checkered one piece walnut grip about perfect. The gun clearly shows careful use and doubtless accompanied Nicholls throughout his Confederate service. The gun is cased with all correct original accessories including screw driver, nipple wrench, bullet mould (also marked Tranter's Patent), James Dixon & Sons copper flask, caps, oiler, and cleaning rods as well as green paper labeled tins of "Tranter's Patent Lubricating Bullets" and "Lubricating Composition". All accessories near mint. The original green felt lined, brass bound, English walnut case bears the following bold period ink inscription on the bottom, "Property of F. R. T. Nicholls/ a gift from/ his beloved/ Carollene Guion Nicholls/ November 1861". Apparently Nicholls and Mr. Guion were, in fact related by marriage. The lid of the case exhibits a couple of age cracks but very sound with nice rich patina overall.Francis Reddin Tillou Nicholls graduated from West Point in 1855 and in the Spring of 1861 enrolled as a captain in the 8th Louisiana CSA. He subsequently assumed command of the 15th Louisiana and was promoted to brigadier general October 14, 1862, commanding the 2nd Louisiana Brigade, Jackson's (old) Division, 2nd Corps, Army of Northern Virginia. He fought at 1st Bull Run and joined Jackson for the Valley Campaign in which he was captured and lost his left arm at 1st Winchester. He was exchanged and, after recovery from his severe wounds, returned to duty in January 1863. He was seriously wounded again at Chancellorsville leading his brigade in a charge, losing a foot, and spent the remainder of the war in the Trans-Mississippi Dept. After the war Nicholls served two terms as Governor of Louisiana, and subsequently headed the state supreme court, dying in Thibodeaux, Louisiana in 1912. A beautiful gun with a great history of service in the hands of a gallant Louisiana "fighting general."
