Description

Superb Civil War-Era Artillery Snare Drum by Horstmann, Brothers & Company. 17-inches in diameter, 16 ½-inches high. This regulation-style drum features a large hand-painted eagle and shield with a banner captioned "U.S. Artillery". The drum has round-head brass tacks arranged in designs around the vent hole. Affixed to the inside shell is a "Horstmann, Brothers & Co. / Military Furnishers, / Fifth and Cherry Street / Philadelphia" paper label. The leather ears and likely the rope are later replacements. The drum is complete with six new strands of snare gut held by a brass strainer. The strainer has been modified in modern times by the addition of a copper penny soldered into the groove of the screw head to facilitate tensioning the snares. Batter head complete; lower skin repaired. Far fewer artillery drums come to market than their infantry counterparts.

Condition: Very good. The counterhoops and shell are scuffed and scratched. Replaced elements, as noted. Snare counterhoop needs to be properly seated.
