Description

Stafford 3" Civil War Shell. Identical to Fig. III B-18 in Melton and Pawl, but no fuze. This 3 inch rifle shell was patented by Charles W. Stafford on Dec. 24, 1864, however, there have been no battlefield recoveries and they were apparently not actually used during the war. This example has an unthreaded fuze aperture and is in very good condition, totally untouched, with a coating of light to medium pitting on most of the exterior, and retains both brass rifling bands on the base, as well as the bolt on the bottom.
