Description
Exceptionally Rare Large Albumen Image of the Sumter Light Guards
Spectacular Large Albumen Photograph of the Sumter Light Guards, Augusta, Georgia, Circa April, 1864. 16" x 11" print mounted to studio board to an overall size of 18" x 14". Tucker & Perkins Photographic Artists Augusta & Columbus, Georgia studio mark blind-stamped in the lower left corner of the board. Faintly written by hand beneath the image is the caption "Sumter Light Guards". The image was professionally cleaned in 2002 and a letter from the conservator detailing the complete process accompanies the photograph.Arguably one of the most recognizable of all Confederate images and exceptional in the amount of detail yielded by prolonged viewing. The outdoor image features Captain William L. Johnson in front of the 72 officers and men of the Sumter Light Guards, mustered into Confederate service as Company K, 4th Georgia Infantry. This image is one of the only views of an actual full-strength Confederate company under colors taken during the war. In this image the company appears to be wearing tight-fitting, nine-button shell jackets trimmed with buff colored cloth shoulder straps. The officers and non-commissioned officers wear blue frock coats. Under extreme magnification the caps appear to have brass "K / 4R" insignia. Three black drummers in a mixture of military and civilian clothing appear in the second row. The First National pattern flag has been retouched as its movements would have rendered it a ghostly blur. This image is exceptional in many respects: size, detail and for its near iconic status and will be an important addition to even the most advanced collection.
