Description

Silk Headquarters Flag of the 8th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry Archivally framed and mounted with a sight view of 17" X 21 1/2". We have carefully dismantled the frame, and the flag is tacked on the edges to a period 3/4" thick wooden board, with the actual size being just slightly larger than the sight size. The flag appears to be full size at 18" X 22" without the hoist which was clearly neatly cut off when the frame was mounted on the board, doubtless shortly after the war. The flag is constructed entirely of silk with the 34 stars and battle honors being exquisitely stitched. The 13 stripes list the battle honors of Yorktown, Williamsburg, Seven Pines, Glendale, Malvern Hills, which is inexplicably listed on two successive stripes, Bristow, Bull Run, Chantilly, Fredericksburgh, and Chancellorsville and Gettysburg which are both listed on the bottom stripe. Embroidered below the canton is 8th N. J. V. and beneath that Col. Ramsey. The silk body of the flag is approx. 80% intact and does not appear to require stabilization or restoration.
Col. John Ramsey took command of the regiment on 4/1/63 after the resignation of the original regimental commander Adolphus Johnson. Ramsey served as the regimental commander until his elevation to brigade command in July 1864 with his commission to Brigadier General. He was subsequently commissioned Major General at the end of the war with rank retroactive to March 1865. Ramsey was wounded commanding the regiment at both Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. He was again wounded in front of Petersburg. Interestingly Ramsey is listed as the commander of the 8th New Jersey, despite his elevation to brigadier, up to his 1865 muster out date. The 8th New Jersey was one of the most heavily fought New Jersey regiments of the war, losing 176 men killed and mortally wounded.
A visually striking and historically important Civil War flag and, although unsigned and based on the embroidery quality and style, very likely the product of Tiffany & Co..
