Scoped Heavy Barrel .54 Caliber Percussion Sharpshooter Rifle, E. Phillips New York The rifle is 45" overall with a 29" .54 caliber heavy octagon barrel, marked "E. Phillips New York Cast Steel", each flat measures 5/8". Muzzle turned for 1 3/8", originally equipped with a false muzzle - now missing. Functioning double-set triggers, back action lock. All fittings are iron. Mounted on the barrel / tang is a 22 1/2" copper tubed telescopic sight with clear and viewable optics, adjustable for both elevation and windage. All metal with a smooth finish, the fittings are gray, the barrel with much original blue finish now faded to brown. There are vise marks running for 5" on two sides of the barrel directly in front of the lock. The nicely figured walnut stock exhibits a raised cheek rest and checkering at the wrist and is in excellent condition. Rifles such as this were deadly in the hands of trained sharpshooters on both sides throughout the Civil War.
