Description

Robert E. Lee: Three Strands of Hair from the Confederate General. The hair is contained in a small plastic pocket that is attached to a document bearing a portrait of Lee, a scan of the original letter that held the hair, and a printed certification of the hair written by Charles Hamilton, autograph and handwriting expert. The certification reads, "I certify that I have examined the original authentication, of which an exact photocopy appears above, and find that it is a genuine document of the period, recording that Lee personally cut these strands of hair from his head on April 19th, 1869, and presented the lock to Louise R. Thome." Also accompanying this presentation is a certificate of authenticity from University Archives in Westport, Connecticut.
