Description

Regulation Civil War US-Issue Poncho in Superb Condition with period ID and maker's mark. Regulation form, rubberized canvas, 45" X 69" with reinforced brass grommets along the sides and 14" reinforced section in the center with slit for the head to pass through with tin button for closure to use the poncho for other purposes such as ground cover, etc. Condition is about mint. Very supple and sound in basically 'as issued' condition. The finest condition example we've ever seen. Stenciled on one corner "D. Wiseman/Co. C 2d Wisc. Cav.", and on the other corner an oval red ink maker's stamp. Rather light and difficult to decipher but appears to be the "Union India Rubber Co." of New York. Wiseman enlisted in the regiment on 1/11/62 and served until his capture at Lick Creek, Ark. on 1/12/63. He subsequently mustered out with the regiment at Austin, Tx. on 11/15/65. Based on the condition of the poncho, this was likely issued to Wiseman after he returned to the regiment from his term as a POW. Really no finer example extant, with superb period and maker's mark.
