Description

Carried by Frederick Dyer, Author of the Compendium of the War of the Rebellion

Regulation Civil War Painted Eagle Drum Carried By Frederick Dyer, 7th Connecticut Infantry In untouched condition, this Regulation Civil War painted eagle drum measures 14" high with a 17 diameter. The ropes and heads are original, the top head is split, one leather tightener remains, on which is pinned a small brass shield. Brass tack design around the air hole and along the seem, there is no label. The painted eagle is about perfect, exhibiting nice detail and strong colors. The drum was deaccesioned from a Mid-Western historical society in early 1997, along with a lock of hair and sold through a local antiques dealer. The name associated with the drum and lock of hair was Frederick Metgzer, Co H, 7th Conn. Infantry. Frederick Metgzer was, in fact, an assumed name used by an underage Frederick Dyer, who, with a friend, at the age of fourteen ran away from school with the intention of joining the army. The friend decided not to join and Dyer assumed his friends surname Metgzer.

Frederick H. Dyer enlisted on July 25, 1863 as a drummer, was mustered into Company H, 7th Connecticut Infantry. Mustered out on July 20, 1865. After the war he printed and sold escutcheons to veterans, went into the printing business and is best known for his book A Compendium of the War of the Rebellion - a complete record of every regiment formed under the Union Army, their histories, and the battles that they fought in- taking 40 years to complete. Accompanying the drum is the lock of Dyers hair, now framed, and a letter from Walter Budd of Durham, North Carolina, relating the circumstances surrounding the drum's initial discovery.
