Description

Really Choice Example of a Civil War Cavalry Officers Cap. This typical Civil War chasseur cap is highlighted by a small "crossed sabers" cavalry officers insignia in gold and silver metallic thread embroidered to a patch sewn on the front. The full, deep blue body is without any other trimming and the crown rises 3" in the front. The cap retains its bound, black glazed leather visor and original chin strap, with "slashed" buttonholes to allow for easy removal. The sidebuttons are backmarked "T. N. Dale and Co." and feature a separately affixed eagle design with a "C" in the raised shield (similar Dale buttons have been excavated on various Civil War sites). Only a small section of the leather sweatband is missing in the interior but the cap retains its full dark green polished cotton lining with simple quilted top. Condition is excellent with only a couple negligible moth nips. A fine example of a popular officers' cap seen in many period photographs yet exceedingly hard to find today.
