Description

Rare Handsewn 35 Star American Flag. The 35th star was added to the American flag in recognition of West Virginia's statehood on June 20, 1863. Sixteen months later Nevada became the 36th state, rendering national flags with 35 stars obsolete and making them particularly desirable to today's collectors. This impressive example is made of bunting, hand sewn throughout, and measures approximately 68" at the hoist and 104" at the fly. The blue canton measures 32" x 40" and contains thirty-five hand cut white cotton stars arrayed in five equal rows. Behind each, the canton has been cut to reveal the star on the obverse side of the flag. The colors are strong and the flag is in very stable condition with a scattering of the expected small holes and tears and some discoloration from age. There are a number of old mended spots done primarily along the top and bottom edges with yarn of the appropriate color that do not detract from the overall appearance. Along the pole side, ten small metal fastening rings are sewn to a strip of brown reinforcing cloth. With its unquestionable 1863-64 usage, this is an uncommon flag with great appeal.
